"I don't even want to think about having to go back to the dark place I was in before I was able to come out and access the care that my doctors have prescribed for me. I want this law to be struck down so that I can continue to receive the care I need, in conversation with my parents and my doctors, and have the freedom to live my life and do the things I enjoy." – 16-year-old girl represented in U.S. v. Skrmetti.
Bunny – tomorrow, I am headed to the Supreme Court to present oral arguments in the case of U.S. v. Skrmetti. In this case, the ACLU is challenging a Tennessee law that bans gender-affirming medical care for transgender youth. The stakes could not be higher for transgender youth who have had their health care banned in nearly half the states in the country. We are fighting to stop these escalating attacks. I'm proud to fight these fights with the full backing of the ACLU – but we can only do this lifesaving work thanks to supporters like you. Knowing that I have the full support of people like you, Bunny, will keep me going tomorrow at the Supreme Court. We at the ACLU have always fought for the rights of all individuals, and there is no organization better built for a major moment like this – but your role is key. Arguing in front of the Supreme Court requires hundreds and hundreds of hours of preparation, from researching case law to drafting briefs and from rehearsing oral arguments to connecting with experts to ensure that we are presenting the best possible arguments before the Court. Beyond this legal work, our advocacy and organizing teams are also mobilizing on the ground in support of transgender youth, fighting nationwide to stop dangerous, anti-LGBTQ legislation. They'll even be rallying outside SCOTUS on the day of our arguments to ensure our clients have our community behind them. I know that with the support of people like you, we can win. Thank you. In solidarity, Chase Strangio | ||
