Harris,
In a healthy democracy, the right to seek safety is not a loophole -- it is a cornerstone. But across the country, that right is under coordinated attack -- not just for immigrants, but for the nonprofits that help them survive.
Donald Trump and his Republican allies in Congress are waging war on over 200 humanitarian groups, including Catholic Charities, CHIRLA (the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights), and the Haitian Bridge Alliance. These groups are not breaking the law -- they are upholding it. They are defending human dignity, providing legal aid, shelter, and support to families fleeing violence and persecution.
Now, the GOP wants to shut them down.
The Trump-aligned House majority is abusing its oversight powers to demand confidential internal records from these groups -- records that could expose vulnerable clients and retraumatize survivors.
We must not allow this extremist campaign to define who we are. These organizations are a vital part of our democracy -- and we must take back their right to serve our communities without fear of political retaliation.
Tell Congress: Stop the political assault on immigrant rights organizations. Take back the right to aid those in need. Reclaim compassion and protect human rights.
As one prong of their attack, Trump's political allies have launched federal investigations into Catholic Charities, smearing the faith-based nonprofit as a criminal enterprise simply for helping immigrants resettle safely.
Meanwhile, CHIRLA is being falsely accused of "coaching" migrants -- a baseless claim that undermines their decades of legal advocacy and threatens their ability to reunite families.
The Haitian Bridge Alliance, which provides humanitarian and legal support to asylum seekers at the border, has been targeted simply for advocating for legal due process for those fleeing persecution.
Senator Josh Hawley even accused immigrant aid workers of "facilitating an invasion" -- reckless, incendiary language meant to incite fear and justify violence.
This is a campaign of intimidation, meant to criminalize compassion. The tactic of requiring confidential records so the government can further persecute those individuals next is reminiscent of McCarthy era tactics, blackmailing targets into "naming names." It's one of the main tactics Trump is using against Harvard.
For decades, nonprofit groups have worked with government agencies to provide support for immigrants where our systems fall short. They are doing the work our democracy demands -- and we must protect their right to do it.
Tell Congress: End the witch hunt. Restore the right of nonprofits to help immigrants who are seeking refuge from violence and persecution in their home countries.
Thank you for taking action -- and for standing with those who stand for human dignity.
