Tonight, Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance will face Tim Walz in their first debate. While Vance has been covering up his true stance on abortion since the 2022 midterms, his record and past statements speak for themselves.
On the topic of abortion rights, Vance has voiced support for a "minimum national standard" — an intentionally vague Republican dog-whistle for a national ban. And back in 2021, he vehemently defended a six-week ban in Texas that included no exceptions and offered a $10,000 bounty for catching abortion-seekers outside that window. In fact, he went so far as to say that he opposes abortion access even in instances of sexual violence, abhorrently claiming that "two wrongs don't make a right."
It should also come as no surprise that Vance's top supporters belong to the ultraconservative wing of the Republican Party. The Heritage Foundation, which helped author Republicans' draconian Project 2025 policy book, calls Vance "one of the leaders — if not the leader — of our movement."
JD Vance is joining many Republicans in trying to mislead voters about their extremist anti-choice views — because they know their true agendas will lose at the ballot box. But his actual stance couldn't be clearer. He is an ultraconservative extremist who has partnered with Donald Trump in an attempt to undo decades of progress and threaten the lives and freedoms of millions of Americans.
So no matter what he says on the debate stage tonight, we're committed to making sure the public knows who JD Vance really is, Harris.
