Harris,
The so-called One Big Beautiful Bill is anything but beautiful -- and as it's heading to the Senate, it's time to force some changes in its priorities.
House Republicans just passed a monstrous, 1,000+ page budget -- cynically branded the One Big Beautiful Bill Act -- that's not only a huge handout to the ultra-rich, but is also an authoritarian wish list for a police state. It's stuffed with handouts to weapons manufacturers, surveillance and deportation agencies, while gutting essential services that keep communities healthy and safe.
This budget doesn't just reflect bad priorities -- it's an assault on the idea that the government should serve the people, rather than punish and keep them "in line."
Here's where this bill would send our taxpayer money:
-
Billions more to the Pentagon, despite failing every audit and massive waste
-
Expanded ICE and CBP operations, to detain, deport, and terrorize immigrants
-
Massive increased domestic surveillance, targeting civil rights groups and organizers
-
Increased militarization of "anti-protest" crackdowns, to stifle dissent
-
More money to private prison profiteers, even as incarceration rates fall
And here's where the money is coming from (hint: think of programs that actually improve and support people's lives):
-
Slashing Medicaid, threatening health care access for tens of millions
-
Rolling back SNAP, forcing more families into food insecurity
-
Cutting child care and housing assistance, when costs are skyrocketing
-
Gutting education, mental health, and maternal care, especially in low-income areas
-
Defunding climate resilience, as climate disasters are deadlier and more frequent
Send a direct message to your Senators urging them to reject this backwards budget and prioritize social services that support our communities over ICE and Pentagon profiteers.
This isn't fiscal responsibility. It's a redistribution of public wealth into the hands of ICE, Big Oil, and military contractors, in addition to the ultra-rich -- all at the expense of working families.
But the good news is: the bill was only able to pass in the House by a razor-thin margin. Now cracks are already showing within the GOP that could provide openings for community-friendly modifications.
-
Some Republicans demanded harsher work requirements for Medicaid eligibility (to pay for being sick, you have to be well enough to work).
-
Some wanted more tax breaks for the wealthy, while others worried about the deficit, creating a two-headed llama effect like Dr. Doolittle's "push-me pull-you."
-
Some wanted more clean energy funding for their own states, recognizing the reality of future growth opportunities regardless of short-sighted MAGA dogma.
These divisions amongst Republicans give us a real chance to stop this dangerous bill in the Senate -- but only if we act now.
The choice is clear: We can either build a society rooted in care, or bankroll one rooted in control and punishment. We know what kind of future we want. Let's demand a budget that reflects it.
Tell your Senators: Reject the One Big Beautiful Bill. Take back authoritarian handouts and invest in health care, housing, education, climate, and food security instead.
Thank you for being part of the fight to reclaim our future.
