Harris,
I'm guessing that by now, you know about Trump's plan to replace expert career professionals with political loyalists throughout his administration.
I'm writing to you about this now because Trump's Office of Personnel Management (OPM) has proposed a new rule that will enable the administration to make these new hires – but we still have time to stop them. The OPM's official public comment period is open through May 23 – that's this Friday.
This is our only opportunity to make our views known officially, and to be included in the formal record, before the rule change is made. It's important that we do so, because not only will this plan add to the polarization of the federal government, but it will jeopardize the essential services millions of Americans rely on every day.
Under this proposed rule, career civil servants – including the nonpartisan experts who ensure Social Security checks go out on time – could be replaced with MAGA loyalists handpicked not for their qualifications, but for their political views.
This plan, straight from the Project 2025 authoritarian blueprint, is a direct threat to the stability and continuity of government services. It would open the door for Trump to fire experienced professionals and install political operatives, even in places like the Department of Veterans Affairs, where patients deserve trained medical professionals, not partisan appointees.
We can't allow essential programs like Social Security, veterans' care, or disaster response to be handed over to unqualified ideologues. Americans need a steady, experienced, and impartial civil service, not a revolving door of political cronies.
Click here to use our simple tool to submit an official comment on this dangerous proposed rule now.
Our partners at Social Security Works have supplied a sample comment that you can submit as is, so taking action can be as simple as sign and send.
However, it is helpful if you customize your comment to add personal details about why this is important to you specifically – for example, if you're a Social Security beneficiary or a veteran, be sure to say so! All comments will be public on the government website, so do not include personal information you don't want in the public domain. Consider including info that could increase your political impact, like "I'm a Republican" or "I live in rural America."
We must demand that the nuts and bolts of our government consist of a stable, professional civil service of experts in their fields, not political loyalists acting on the partisan viewpoints of whoever is in charge. Submit an official comment to the Office of Personnel Management here.
Thank you for defending the nonpartisan experts who keep our government – and our lives – running smoothly.
