Bunny – This year, as Massachusetts lawmakers build our state budget, there's a lot of uncertainty. How will Trump's tariffs affect the economy? What federal funding cuts lurk around the corner? But this much we know for certain: when Trump attacks Massachusetts values, Massachusetts fights back! Urge your state senator to stand up for immigrants and free expression in the budget!
The good news is that the Massachusetts House put money in their budget – $5 million – to support the legal defense of immigrants. This money would go to a first-ever public-funded program to provide no-cost immigration legal services to immigrants in Massachusetts who are at imminent risk of deportation. We applaud their leadership in helping to provide legal counsel to hard-working state residents caught up in Trump's deportation machine. Now it's the Senate's turn. Please urge your senator to support an amendment filed by Senator Adam Gomez to include this line item in the Senate's budget. In addition to appropriations, the budget can also be a vehicle for important public policy reform, such as anti-censorship efforts. Books like Maya Angelou's "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" and books on the Holocaust were recently removed from the Naval Academy library in a federal anti-diversity purge. We know that Massachusetts schools have also faced similar censorship efforts. Thankfully, Senator Julian Cyr has proposed a budget amendment to protect against ideologically driven book bans. Please ask your senator to support much-needed statutory protections against library censorship! Budgets tell a story. Let's make sure our next state budget reflects Massachusetts values of diversity and inclusion – and pushes back against the attacks waged by the Trump administration. In solidarity, ACLU of Massachusetts |
