Harris,
Bring back the public servants Trump purged, before it's too late.
Donald Trump isn't just firing over 250,000 federal workers. He is deliberately dismantling the backbone of American governance -- not to save money, not for efficiency, and not even simply out of political spite. His deeper motive is far more dangerous: to gut the civil service and replace expertise with obedience.
By hollowing out the federal workforce, Trump is creating a void -- one he plans to fill with loyalists who will rubber-stamp his most extreme, autocratic directives. Not to question them or challenge them, just to carry them out.
The people Trump fired en masse weren't partisans. Most had served administrations of both parties. Most had good to excellent performance reviews. They were scientists, public health experts, legal analysts, environmental regulators -- professionals who devoted their careers to safeguarding the public interest. Their only "crime" was performing their duties with competence, independence, and integrity.
Now, Representative Don Beyer has introduced two pieces of legislation to reverse the damage:
-
The REHIRE Act would give hiring preference to the career professionals wrongfully removed by Trump. This would go a long way toward restoring the knowledge, continuity, and skill that our institutions need.
-
The PREP Act would protect future public servants from being fired for political reasons -- so that no president can again purge government employees simply for doing their jobs.
Send a direct message to Congress to reinstate the federal workers that Trump purged, and prevent future mass firings without cause. Restore our national expertise and rebuild our democracy. Pass the REHIRE and PREP Acts Now.
What's at stake isn't just staffing levels — it's the very functioning of our democracy itself.
When Trump replaced independent professionals with partisan loyalists, he didn't just weaken the bureaucracy: he disabled the essential checks that ensure government decisions are based on facts, not ideology.
The loss is profound:
-
Fewer scientists to detect and respond to pandemics.
-
Fewer regulators to catch consumer fraud or food contamination.
-
Fewer weather analysts to track hurricanes or predict floods.
-
Fewer legal experts to defend the Constitution from abuse.
Stripping away that infrastructure doesn't just make government "smaller" -- it makes it more dangerous, vulnerable to the whims of a single man who answers to no one.
This is how authoritarianism takes root: by replacing a government of laws and expertise with one of loyalty and fear.
It's time to fight back. Let's bring back the experts. And let's make sure no president can ever again turn our government into a one-man show.
Demand that Congress reinstate the professionals Trump fired, and protect future federal workers from political purges.
Thank you for defending the public service, now and for the future!
