Dear Harris,
I don't want to cause undue alarm, but I truly believe that America is rapidly moving from democracy to full-blown authoritarianism.
In just the past week, the Trump regime has:
- Filed charges against a sitting member of Congress after she conducted a routine oversight visit at an ICE facility in her district.
- Deported eight men to the war-torn country of South Sudan in violation of a direct federal court order.
- Issued an order banning Harvard University from admitting international students, a crushing blow to Harvard and academic freedom everywhere, if upheld by the courts.
It's all straight out of the same authoritarian playbook used by Russia's Vladimir Putin and Hungary's Viktor Orbán.
First, weaponize the justice system against political opponents. Second, end the prohibition against arbitrary abduction and imprisonment. Third, destroy universities as centers of free speech and political dissent.
It's up to us to fight back, or else we soon may not have a democracy left to defend. That's why I'm asking you to make a donation to help educate the public, get the truth out, and stop Trump's authoritarian assault on our democracy.
For all the chaos and incompetence we see from this administration every day, their effort to dismantle American democracy has been systematic, focused, and relentless.
The threats against judges. The intimidation of the free press. The attacks on higher education. The terrifying arrests and deportations of legal residents without due process.
We've seen it all before, and we tell ourselves it can't happen here. But experts on authoritarianism like Anne Applebaum and Timothy Snyder warn that not only is it happening, it's happening at a faster speed than it did in countries like Russia or Hungary.
Thankfully, there's a growing backlash to Trump's authoritarian assault on democracy. His net approval ratings have fallen nearly 20 points. Huge crowds are showing up at town hall meetings, protests, and rallies.
Now we must step on the gas, and the team here at Inequality Media Civic Action is working day and night to sound the alarm and mobilize the public. But with America on the brink, we're counting on your support to power everything we do.
Will you make a donation to help Inequality Media Civic Action educate the public, get the truth out, and stop Trump's assault on our democracy?
Thank you,
Robert Reich
