Harris,
When CBS canceled The Late Show with Stephen Colbert this week, they claimed it was just business. But don't be fooled, the timing, the politics, and the pressure all reek of corruption.
Colbert blasted CBS and parent company Paramount for handing Donald Trump $16 million to settle a sham lawsuit. He called it what it was, a "big fat bribe" to get Trump's blessing for their $8 billion merger with Skydance Media. The Trump administration still has to greenlight that merger, and CBS just made their offering at the altar of power by sacrificing Colbert.
If that doesn't scream political censorship, what does?
Let's be clear, this is a dangerous precedent. A free press, especially things like satirical, late-night comedy, is fundamental to a functioning democracy. Colbert has been one of the sharpest voices holding power to account for the better part of two decades. To see CBS cave like this is not only gutless, it's corrosive. That's why we need a grassroots army to push back.
See exactly what corporate power doesn't want you to see as Stephen Colbert calls them out, then demand that CBS reinstate The Late Show and stop bowing to political pressure.
Trump's war on the media isn't new, but the cowardice with which CBS and Paramount just surrendered is stunning. They didn't even try to hide it. And the fact that they think people will buy the "private business decision" excuse only shows how normalized this kind of corporate complicity has become.
CBS pulled the rug out from under millions of Americans who rely on independent voices to speak truth to power. Colbert is one of the last late-night hosts willing to go toe-to-toe with Trump's corruption night after night. His monologues hold nothing back.
It's no surprise that Skydance CEO David Ellison, who's been pushing for less partisan content, is waiting in the wings, ready to reshape the media landscape with a neutered, corporate-friendly tone. Their goal is to run propaganda for the Trump administration, and Stephen Colbert is the first to be kicked out.
We need to push back, now by showing CBS and Paramount that viewers won't be silent while they silence dissent. Demand they reinstate The Late Show and expose the political strings behind this cancellation.
Let's make sure CBS understands that they don't get to cancel criticism and call it business.
