Bunny – A breaking update from our previous message last Friday on the fight against presidential abuse of power: The Trump administration just filed charges against New Jersey Congresswoman LaMonica McIver – 11 days after the wrongful arrest of Newark Mayor Ras Baraka. Both were attempting to investigate conditions at an ICE detention facility. Let's be crystal clear about what happened here: First, the Trump administration tried to stop a member of Congress from conducting legally authorized oversight of an ICE facility detaining our neighbors. Now they've filed charges against her on a pretext to make an example of her. The charges against Congresswoman McIver and Mayor Baraka show that the Trump administration will pursue methods more suited to authoritarianism than American democracy to consolidate its power against those who check it. And if the Trump administration can target elected officials who oppose its extreme agenda, it can happen to any one of us. President Trump's goal in the first months of this administration is to bully people into silence. The message is as clear as it is dangerous: 'Toe the line or face the consequences.' But we have faith that the millions of people in this country who believe in freedom and the rule of law will not be silenced. The ACLU demands that the charges against Congresswoman McIver are dropped, and we implore her fellow members of Congress to call for the same. More soon, The ACLU Team |

Bunny – From deportations without due process to chilling arrests of public leaders and attacks on civil society, the Trump administration is continuing to abuse its power in dangerously unprecedented ways. But since Day One, the ACLU and our community have fought back. We will never surrender our freedoms to a lawless executive branch. As a member of our community, we wanted you to have the latest from this ongoing fight against President Trump's blatant abuse of power. Here's what to know heading into the weekend:
Bunny, we are not going to allow anybody to trample on our constitutional rights, whether it's the rights of immigrants, our rights to free speech, the right to due process, or any other constitutional right that we have at the core of our democracy. Together, in the courts, in our communities, and in the streets, we will keep fighting to realize the promise of a free and democratic nation. Thank you for being a part of this urgent work and we will continue to keep you posted in the days and weeks to come. For the people, The ACLU Team |
