Harris, Donald Trump ran for office pledging to punish anyone he deems a political opponent, and he's spent his first three and half months in office making good on those threats. Now Republicans in Congress want to hand him even more sweeping powers to crush nonprofit organizations that dare to criticize him.1 A provision hidden deep in the massive tax-cut bill just passed by a key House committee would give the Trump administration the authority to strip the tax-exempt nonprofit status of any group in the country by simply labeling them as a "terrorist supporting organization."2 This is what authoritarianism looks like — and we need to mobilize major public outcry to stop this bill from ever becoming law. Supporters of this "nonprofit killer bill" claim that it's needed to bar U.S.-based organizations from funding terrorists, but that's already illegal under multiple statutes.3 In reality, this legislation is about silencing political dissent and giving Trump the power to shut down his political opponents. A previous version of the nonprofit killer bill passed the House of Representatives last November, but Demand Progress, along with a broad coalition of nonprofit organizations, was able to stop the bill in the Senate.4 But with Republicans now in charge of both the House and Senate, it will be even harder to stop the nonprofit killer bill this time around. Demand Progress Action has already mobilized tens of thousands of people to contact Congress about this bill, and now we need to turn up the heat.
