Harris,
The rule of law must apply to everyone -- especially the president.
The Trump administration has unlawfully deported over 200 immigrants, without charges or trial, without access to family or legal counsel, to a notorious prison in El Salvador where torture is routine. These deportations were carried out suddenly, in secret, in direct defiance of U.S. and international law. El Salvador's own justice minister brags the only exit from the prison is "in a coffin." This is not immigration enforcement. It's state-sanctioned brutality.
And it's not just happening -- it's being flaunted. When the Supreme Court ordered the return of a deported resident, Trump mocked the decision on live television with El Salvador's president, laughing in the Oval Office as they openly ignored the Court's ruling. This is more than a human rights crisis: it's a full-blown constitutional emergency.
If a president can disregard court orders and deport legal residents to be tortured abroad, then no one is safe -- not immigrants, not critics, not even U.S. citizens. Trump has said so himself. That's why a group of courageous senators -- Tim Kaine, Chris Van Hollen, Alex Padilla, and Minority Leader Chuck Schumer -- are taking a stand with S.Res.195, a privileged resolution demanding immediate action.
Tell your Senators: Vote YES on S.Res.195. We must restore the rule of law and bring these deported residents home now.
A privileged resolution is a powerful tool. It forces a vote without approval of the Majority Leader, and it can't be held up with a filibuster or vetoed by the President. S.Res.195 itself will require the Trump administration to investigate the foreign prison's abuses, assess whether and how the U.S. is involved, and force the U.S. to comply with the Supreme Court's orders.
And this resolution comes with consequences: If the Trump administration fails to respond, federal law mandates the suspension of U.S. security aid to El Salvador.
We know this won't be an easy vote in a MAGA-controlled Senate. But if we can keep Senate Democrats united and convince just enough Republicans who vote their conscience, or whose constituents demand it, we can win the vote.
That's why it's urgent for every Senator to hear from the people now. We must demand accountability. We must demand justice.
Tell Congress: The Constitution is not optional. No more secret deportations. No more torture. Pass S.Res.195 now.
Thank you for raising your voice in defense of justice.
