Harris, The one branch of the government that has held back Donald Trump's assault on democracy is the federal judiciary, and now Republicans are trying to strip away even that check on his power. A one-sentence provision hidden in the 1,116-page "One Big Beautiful Bill Act" would make it nearly impossible for judges to enforce rulings against Trump's illegal actions, and an even more extreme attack on judges has just been added to the Senate version of the bill.1 Demand Progress has mobilized tens of thousands of people to resist Trump's assault on the judiciary, but with democracy teetering on the brink, we're asking of your help to ramp up our efforts. Donald Trump has ramped up his authoritarian rampage with a succession of arrests of Democratic elected officials — including a U.S. Senator, member of Congress, county judge, the mayor of Newark, and just yesterday, the New York City comptroller.2 It's like something out of a totalitarian police state, not the United States of America, and we need judges to be able to uphold the law. But the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, recently passed by the House of Representatives, would strip federal judges of the power to hold Trump administration officials in contempt when they defy court orders or refuse to obey injunctions blocking Trump's illegal actions.3 The latest Senate version of Trump's mega-bill goes even further and would bar judges from issuing orders blocking Trump's Illegal actions in the first place, a provision that is similar to the No Rogue Rulings Act, a bill passed by the House in March.4 Taken together, these policies would cripple the federal judiciary as a meaningful check on Trump's power — which is exactly what Republicans have in mind.
