As we commemorate the 10-year anniversary of the Obergefell decision—the landmark ruling that legalized marriage equality—I find myself reflecting deeply on my own journey as a gay man. Growing up, I delayed coming out to my friends and community until adulthood, when I finally felt safe to do so. The Obergefell ruling was not just a pivotal moment in my life; it was a monumental victory for countless individuals who dared to dream of loving freely and openly, without fear or shame.
However, in the wake of Trump's election, our hard-won LGBTQ+ rights are facing unprecedented threats. We see book bans, restrictions preventing trans youth from participating in school sports, and alarming suggestions that the Supreme Court may even reverse the Obergefell decision.
Amidst these challenges, local leaders and school board members have become our frontline defenders, courageously resisting these cruel, unjust, and un-American actions. Their commitment reminds us of the vital role local activism plays in safeguarding our civil liberties.
At Local Democracy Project, we are passionately dedicated to empowering progressive leaders who recognize that protecting our rights begins at the grassroots level. We can't afford to take our progress for granted; it demands our vigilance and relentless action.
As we honor this significant milestone in marriage equality, I invite you to join us in this critical mission. Your support is essential in ensuring that our rights and democracy are shielded from those who seek to undermine them.
