Bunny – You've seen the videos; you've read the news reports; you might even be personally impacted. You already know that Trump's deportation machine brings nothing but fear and chaos to our communities, and that it shows no sign of stopping. But you should also know that this administration is constantly looking for ways to exploit state and local resources in pursuit of its deportation goals. Simply put, Trump wants to make us cogs in this machine, and one of his preferred ways to do this is through so-called "287(g) agreements".
287(g) agreements allow the federal government to deputize local officials, granting them federal deportation powers and effectively making them ICE agents on our local streets. Since January, this administration has increased the number of 287(g) agreements more than five-fold around the country. And right now, there is nothing to stop police in Massachusetts from signing up. We can't let local police become willing accomplices in this cruelty and madness. We need to pass legislation that will stop 287(g) agreements from spreading in Massachusetts – because we refuse to be cogs in Trump's deportation machine. Lawmakers on Beacon Hill need to hear from us on this issue. Will you urge them to prevent 287(g) agreements in Massachusetts? In solidarity, ACLU of Massachusetts |
