Happy Juneteenth, Harris! As a substitute history teacher (and student of history myself), I had to share with you today the story of how our newest federal holiday came to be. Juneteenth commemorates the final enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation abolishing slavery in Galveston, Texas on June 19, 1865. Here in Florida, generations of Black and African Americans have lived, learned, and passed down our spirit of joy and humanity — amidst slavery, Jim Crow, and the modern day tyranny of Stand Your Ground, Shelby County v. Holder, and the Supreme Court's ending of affirmative action. This Juneteenth, for those of us like you and me in the struggle for social, racial, and economic justice, Harris, we celebrate and recommit ourselves to our nation's founding aspirations of true freedom, equality, and justice for all. We have always sought but not yet achieved the fulfillment of our country's founding promise, but if we work together, we can bend the moral arc of the universe a bit more closely toward justice. I know that right now that may feel far away — what with Trump's military parades, extrajudicial ICE raids, and the violent manhandling of United States senators for conducting basic constitutional oversight. But this administration's abuses of our fundamental freedoms, liberties, and civil rights cannot sustain themselves. The American people will fight back. We always have. Having you by my side in this campaign gives me faith. I know that together, we have the power to make the nation we might yet become. With gratitude, Elijah
