Harris, I grew up on Medicaid in the historically Black community of Sistrunk in Fort Lauderdale. I was the fifth of seven children on my mother's side — two sisters and five brothers. We each got one pair of shoes that our mom would tell us to last the entire school year. We shopped with food stamps and got Section 8 housing — which wasn't always enough to keep a roof over our heads. Medicaid ensured that an impoverished working family like ours had health insurance when we needed it. I've lost my Medicaid due to Florida being one of only 10 states not to expand it under the Affordable Care Act. And now, Republicans are attempting to cut Medicaid by $800 billion dollars nationwide. I won't mince words: This is an act of violence on working people to give billionaires yet another tax break.
