I've been chronically homeless, Harris. One of my first memories was of the Broward sheriff and our landlord evicting my mother from our apartment. All of the lights were off, and when we heard the knock on the door, my mother whispered to us to be quiet. I didn't know what was happening, just that afterwards we would be living out of the car for weeks at a time. Section 8 housing was not always enough for families like mine growing up. In the mornings before school, we would use the public showers at the beach before sunrise. Sometimes we would show up in the same clothes as the day before. On occasion, a teacher with a watchful eye would help us out with a change of clothes from the lost and found. I know what it's like to couch surf and live apart from my siblings at times due to chronic homelessness. No child should have to grow up that way. That is why in Congress, I will fight to pass legislation to massively expand our affordable public housing inventory. In a Congress full of millionaires, investment bankers, and attorneys, there are hardly any voices giving true representation to working people. We need that voice more than ever — that's what this campaign is about. But we have an important fundraising deadline coming up at the end of this month, and to win our race we need to reach our FEC goal. I'm not accepting a dime of corporate PAC money, so I mean it when I say that this is truly a people-powered campaign. With gratitude, Elijah |
