Harris,
Trump's Big Bad Budget Bill punishes immigrants -- whether they're here legally or not.
The House has passed a massive budget bill, and now the Senate is negotiating what could be one of the most damaging pieces of legislation in years -- not just for immigrants, but for our entire country.
Instead of supporting families, this bill targets immigrant communities at every level, whether individuals are documented, undocumented, legal residents, or even U.S. citizen children in mixed-status families.
This policy is worse than bad -- it's an all-out attack on the people who grow our food, care for our children and elders, and help build the backbone of our economy. Whether one has legal status or not, this bill is designed to make life harder, families poorer, and communities unwelcoming.
The Senate must reject this cruel, anti-immigrant blueprint and go back to the drawing board. America's budget should reflect its values -- not punish families for who they are or where they come from.
Send a direct message to tell your Senators to reject Trump's anti-immigrant budget and demand a bill that respects all families -- no exceptions.
The specifics are mind-boggling, clearly meant to be punitive. Here's what the Trump-GOP budget bill does:
-
Strips the Child Tax Credit from 4.5 million U.S. citizen and legal permanent resident children ($2,000 per child) -- just because one of their parents lacks a Social Security number. It's not enough for the child to be a U.S. citizen, or just one of their parents.
-
Cuts legal immigrants off from Medicare benefits they've paid into for over a decade, denying them care they've earned.
-
Penalizes states that choose to use their own funds to provide healthcare for immigrant communities. It's not enough for the federal government to deny healthcare; the Republicans aren't happy until every state is forced to withhold the same.
-
Slaps immigrants with massive new or increased fees -- up to thousands of dollars each -- such as registering for permanent residence ($1,440), obtaining a green card ($3,005), premium processing ($2,805), applying for asylum ($1,000), reuniting with family ($675), or helping unaccompanied children ($8,500 or more).
-
Provides hundreds of billions of dollars for Trump's mass deportation machine, including detaining and removing both legal and illegal immigrants from the country -- too often, without even a semblance of due process.
We need a budget that strengthens communities, invests in children, and honors the values engraved on the Statue of Liberty: "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free." We are a nation of immigrants. To disparage this basic fact is to denigrate our own identity.
Tell your Senators: Reject the shameful Trump budget bill and demand changes that respect the integrity of families now.
Thank you for standing up for those whose voices are put down and repressed.
