Donald Trump is suing CBS News for $20 billion because 60 Minutes aired an interview he didn't like. This is an open attack on the First Amendment and a clear attempt to silence critical journalism.
And now, instead of fighting back, CBS's parent company, Paramount, is reportedly considering a $75 million settlement to grease the wheels for a lucrative merger. To put it plainly, Paramount might sell out press freedom to line their pockets. The message to Trump and his cronies would be clear, if you sue the press, you get paid.
That's why Senator Bernie Sanders and nine of his Democratic colleagues are sounding the alarm. They sent a letter to Paramount chair Shari Redstone urging her to reject any settlement and stand firm in defense of the First Amendment.
If powerful media companies start capitulating to authoritarians, the American people will lose one of their last lines of defense.
Let's make sure we back this message with a powerful grassroots response. If Shari Redstone won't listen to the Senate, maybe she'll listen to thousands of citizens demanding that she stand up to Trump's bullying and defend press freedom, not corporate greed.
The idea that Trump, who's been openly hostile to journalists, who called the media "the enemy of the people," who cheered violence against reporters should now be able to profit from that strategy is sickening. He's not just testing the legal system. He's testing whether media outlets will roll over and sell out the Constitution for stockholder returns.
We've seen this pattern before. Trump files lawsuits not to win, but to punish, distract, and intimidate. It's a strategy straight from the authoritarian playbook and if it works this time, it won't be the last. He'll go after other journalists and other networks
This is a moment for courage. A moment for leadership. Paramount must reject any deal that trades the truth for cash. Redstone and the Paramount board have a duty not just to their shareholders, but to the society their network serves.
Tell Paramount, do not let Trump bully the free press into silence.
Together we must defend the truth and protect the First Amendment from Trump's grip.
