UPDATE FOR HARRIS: Republican extremists are enacting a dangerous culture war The vast majority of Republicans AND Democrats are OPPOSED to book bans. Polls show more than 8 in 10 voters believe books should NOT be banned just because they disagree with their content. But the Republican Party is obsessed with banning books. Across the country, school book bans and restrictions rose by 33% in the last school year, with Florida and Texas accounting for 60% of the bans in the U.S.! We need to know who stands with us. So, we’re creating a list of Democrats who oppose book bans, but we don’t know where you stand. Please respond: Do you support book bans? YES NO Submission deadline: 11:59 PM on November 22, 2023 Here’s what we know, Harris: FIRST → Republican extremists like Ron DeSantis called for banning hundreds of books from schools, fueling a radical push against books primarily written by people of color and LGBTQ+ people. THEN → GOP controlled state legislatures and Republican governors began working in tandem to ban books resulting in more than 3,362 bans in the 2022-'23 school year. FORTUNATELY → Democratic governors have been leading the charge against these dangerous book bans, with governors like Wes Moore and Phil Murphy fiercely pushing back against these harmful restrictions on education. Govs. JB Pritzker of Illinois and Gavin Newsom of California even signed legislation banning book bans. BUT THIS FIGHT ISN'T OVER → GOP extremists are shifting their attacks to public libraries, and are even passing laws that could sentence librarians to PRISON.
