Hey Harris, it's Governor Tim Walz – chair of the Democratic Governors Association – and I have some exciting news. |
The DGA just launched the Power to Appoint fund! |
If you are ready to donate $7 and have it matched right now because you know the importance of electing Democratic governors who will appoint judges that uphold the rule of law and serve as an independent backstop against unconstitutional attacks on our freedoms and civil rights, then click here! If you need to hear more, read on. |
Harris, state-level judges matter for a few big reasons: |
- Judges appointed by Democratic governors uphold the rule of law and serve as a backstop against unconstitutional attacks on freedoms and civil rights. After the Dobbs decision, in many states with Republican legislatures, state courts often get final say on abortion rights. In states like Iowa and Montana, there are current court cases blocking abortion bans from becoming law.
- As the Supreme Court recently reaffirmed, state courts have the constitutional ability to block voting restrictions and unfair electoral maps driven by partisan gerrymandering.
- Increasing the number of Democratic-appointed state-level judges will also help rebuild the pipeline of potential federal appointees, as the Biden-Harris administration and Democrats in Congress make a record-number of judicial appointments – changing the entire face of the nation.
|
Americans have never been more aware of the impact the state courts have on their lives when it comes to freedom, democracy and the biggest issues we care about. And the DGA knows that. With the biggest battles shifting to the states, many of these courts and judges will have final say on everything from abortion rights to voting rights. |
That is why we launched the Power to Appoint fund, dedicated to electing Democratic governors determined to appoint judges who will stand up for democracy and protect our fundamental freedoms. |
Almost every governor in America has the important power to appoint judges – 48 out of 50! Since taking office, I personally have made 99 appointments to various Minnesota state courts. These judges are protecting Minnesotans’ fundamental rights on everything from reproductive rights to voting rights. |
Judicial appointments are one of the many key issues at stake in this year’s governors' races in major swing states like New Hampshire and North Carolina, where we know the next governor will make appointments to the NC Supreme Court. |
Americans have already seen how much judicial appointments to federal courts like the U.S. Supreme Court matter – and we’ve seen what happens when extreme politicians appoint judges who rip away rights, like with the Dobbs ruling. |
We can’t let that happen. |
So please, Harris, rush $7 to the DGA’s Power to Appoint Fund before midnight, while all donations are being matched up to our $25,000 Launch Day goal. I’m counting on you. |
Thanks for stepping up, Tim Walz Governor of Minnesota Chair, Democratic Governors Association |
