Harris,
We need to stop the flow of U.S. weapons to violent cartels.
Every year, an estimated 500,000 firearms manufactured in the United States are smuggled into Mexico, arming violent drug cartels and fueling a relentless cycle of bloodshed. These weapons -- many of them military-style assault rifles -- empower the very organizations responsible for widespread terror, kidnappings, and massacres.
Just as U.S. demand for drugs fuels cartel operations, cartel demand for deadly firearms is sustained by America's weak gun laws. While Mexico enforces strict gun regulations, traffickers exploit lax U.S. policies to purchase high-powered weapons and smuggle them south. The result? A devastating "iron river" of firearms flowing from American gun manufacturers to cartel enforcers, enabling their reign of violence.
The Mexican government, unable to stem the flow of U.S. weapons on its own, has taken legal action -- suing gun manufacturers like Smith & Wesson, whose .50 caliber rifles (capable of downing aircraft) are frequently used by the cartels. As the U.S. Supreme Court weighs this case, we must demand urgent legislation to stop the arms trade at its source.
While administration officials make reckless suggestions of unilateral military action within a neighboring country -- a major escalation of violence that would do nothing to solve the problem -- Sen. Dick Durbin and Rep. Joaquin Castro have introduced the Stop Arming Cartels Act, a targeted plan to cut off the cartels' access to deadly American weapons.
Congress must act now! Send a direct message to your senators and representative, and urge them to support the Stop Arming Cartels Act to shut down the gun pipeline fueling cartel terror.
This bill would:
Ban the future manufacture, importation, sale, and transfer of .50 caliber rifles (except for military and law enforcement use).
Register existing .50 caliber rifles under the National Firearms Act for legal owners.
Prohibit firearms sales to drug traffickers designated under the Kingpin Act.
Allow victims of gun violence to sue manufacturers and dealers engaged in illegal sales to cartels.
Require firearms dealers to report multiple .50 caliber rifle sales, just as they must for handguns.
Stopping this deadly pipeline protects us on both sides of the border.
Cartel violence doesn't stay in Mexico -- it spills over into American communities, fueling gang wars, human trafficking, and an epidemic of fentanyl deaths. By shutting down the U.S. gun supply to cartels, we weaken their power, reduce their capacity for violence, and protect innocent lives.
Congress must act now. Tell your representatives to support the Stop Arming Cartels Act and shut down the gun pipeline that fuels cartel terror.
Thank you for helping to end the bloodshed and stop arming cartels.
