Harris, with Donald Trump putting his plan to abolish the Department of Education in motion, I want to take a moment to tell you why the fight to provide quality education to every student in CA-25 is important to me. You may know that I attended UCLA and Harvard Medical School — but I'm also a proud graduate of Coachella Valley High School. I was raised in Coachella, where my mother and father were farmworkers. We didn't have much, but we got by. It was honest, hard work. But my mom always wanted me to go to college so I could have a professional career, and the public education I received right here in the Coachella Valley allowed me to do that. Public education laid the foundation for me to attend college and medical school — and even to be addressing you today as CA-25's Congressman. So when Donald Trump signed an Executive Order dismantling the Department of Education, I took that personally. Every child in CA-25 and beyond deserves access to quality public education free from Donald Trump's interference and agenda. The son of hardworking farmworkers, Dr. Ruiz grew up in Coachella, CA and learned at an early age that the key to attaining the American Dream is hard work and a great education. In the summer of 1990, Raul walked in the desert heat from business to business in the Coachella Valley asking them to invest in their community by contributing to his education. With each investment for college, he made a promise to come back home and serve his community as a physician. In 2012, he decided to take his service to the community to the next level by running for Congress. Dr. Ruiz needs our help to continue fighting for us in Congress.
