Harris,
Trump's assault on journalism is a dire threat to democratic freedoms. Trump and his allies are intensifying efforts to undermine the free press -- a cornerstone of democracy.
Trump's FCC Chair Brendan Carr has threatened to revoke ABC's broadcast license for fact-checking Trump during his debate; NBC's broadcast license for airing an Saturday Night Live episode with Kamala Harris; and CBS's broadcast license for the standard journalistic practice of editing a 60 Minutes interview with Harris.
Meanwhile, Elon Musk and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene also continue to attack PBS and NPR. Musk says he's "gunning" for NPR, while Greene has demanded the heads of these "so-called 'media' outlets" testify before her DOGE subcommittee. She wants to know why PBS implied Musk made a "fascist salute" at Trump's inauguration, when all he did was slap his right hand to his chest before thrusting it up and out in a "Heil Hitler" gesture. Twice. Carr has also called for Congress to defund NPR and PBS, and House Republicans have taken up the charge with new legislation.
This aggressive stance against the media isn't new. During his first term, Trump persistently criticized the press and took steps to dismantle net neutrality, threatening the open internet.
Now, with support from influential allies, his campaign to control information poses an even greater threat. Demand Congress stop Trump's information takeover and assault on the free press and open internet now!
Trump is also harassing CBS News with a gargantuan lawsuit intended to chill freedom of the press by putting billions of dollars on the line. In October 2024, Trump filed a $10 billion lawsuit against CBS News, which he increased in February 2025 to $20 billion, over their editing of the 60 Minutes Kamala Harris interview.
Additionally, in December 2024, ABC News settled a defamation lawsuit brought by Trump for $15 million, following comments made by anchor George Stephanopoulos about Trump being found "liable for rape." In fact, the jury had found Trump liable for "sexual abuse," but in his comments the judge said the New York code was "far narrower" than how "many people understand the word 'rape,'" and that the jury found "Mr. Trump did exactly that."
If these efforts to undermine independent journalism succeed, it could lead to a proliferation of partisan propaganda and misinformation, undermining the public's access to truthful information. This isn't merely an attack on the media; it's an assault on the fabric of democracy.
Allowing Trump and his allies to dominate information channels and suppress independent voices threatens the principles upon which our democracy is built.
Congress must take immediate action to safeguard press freedom, support public journalism, and ensure open internet access. Tell Congress to stop Trump's takeover of the free press!
Thank you for your defense of the core democratic principle, freedom of the press.
