Harris,
Donald Trump has once again proven that cruelty is the point. His administration just gutted LIHEAP, the $4.1 billion federal energy assistance program that helps 6.2 million low-income households survive deadly heat waves and frigid winters.
The entire federal staff responsible for running LIHEAP was fired as part of a sweeping, reckless overhaul of the Department of Health and Human Services. They dismantled the team that keeps heat and air conditioning on for vulnerable families.
This is a direct attack on millions of seniors, children, and struggling Americans who rely on LIHEAP to make it through the most extreme weather. Right now, with summer around the corner, $378 million in LIHEAP funds remain unspent. But without federal staff to oversee the distribution of those funds, states are left scrambling, and millions could be left to swelter in dangerous heat without relief.
The good news? A bipartisan group of U.S. senators, including Republicans like Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski, are demanding that HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. reverse the staffing cuts. But they need our backing.
Help make it clear to Congress that LIHEAP must be protected, the staffing must be restored, and energy assistance must keep flowing.
State officials from Connecticut and Minnesota are already sounding the alarm. They've warned that the program is on the brink of collapse if Trump's cuts aren't reversed immediately. They're still owed vital funding. And if Congress doesn't intervene, families will be left to suffer, forced to choose between paying their utility bills or putting food on the table.
We've been here before. Trump tried to eliminate LIHEAP in his first term. He failed. And he's going to fail again if we fight. This is not a moment for half-measures. These cuts aren't about efficiency, they're about control, cruelty, and making life harder for people who already have the least.
Extreme weather is getting worse every year. People are dying from heat in Texas, freezing in South Dakota, and rationing electricity just to survive. LIHEAP isn't a luxury. It's a lifeline. Stripping it down in the name of political gamesmanship is a moral disgrace.
Congress cannot allow Trump to sabotage this program from behind the scenes. If they don't act, the consequences will be deadly.
Demand Congress save LIHEAP and stop Trump's energy cruelty.
Let's make sure Congress acts so we avoid an entirely preventable crisis.
