Here's what to know: We were in court yesterday demanding that ICE immediately free Tufts student Rümeysa Öztürk, who was snatched off the street by ICE and shipped across the country for co-writing an op-ed in the student newspaper that criticized the university's response to activism on campus. We're expecting a ruling on this case at any moment – and we'll update you as soon as we hear from the judge. Let us be clear: Detaining and attempting to deport someone for writing an op-ed the government disagrees with is a blatant violation of the First Amendment. Ideas are not illegal. Our right to free speech includes advocacy for Palestine, Israel, or any population, movement, or cause. We'll continue to fight for our right to speak freely, without retaliation – and to free Rümeysa Öztürk, Mahmoud Khalil, and others unjustly targeted by this administration. | Bunny, a Louisiana immigration judge just determined that Mahmoud Khalil is removable from the U.S. – based solely on his political speech. This does not mean he's being deported immediately – we are continuing to fight for his freedom in federal court. But let's be clear: Mahmoud Khalil should never have been detained in the first place. It is a shameful mark on our country that the Trump administration is weaponizing ICE to punish people for lawful speech. Mr. Khalil's detention – and the detentions of Rümeysa Öztürk, Badar Khan Suri, and others – flies in the face of every value this country claims to stand for.
