House-passed bill will let Trump crush nonprofits

Congress is on the verge of handing Trump sweeping powers to crush any nonprofit organization that dares to criticize him.

Harris,

We're writing to you today to sound the alarm about legislation passed by the House of Representatives that would give Donald Trump the power to effectively crush any nonprofit organization with the stroke of a pen.1

Under the bill, Trump's treasury secretary could unilaterally strip the tax-exempt status of any group by simply labeling them as "terrorist supporting," which could cause the group to lose banking services or the ability to receive donations.2

It's a death penalty for nonprofits, and because the bill does not distinguish between foreign and domestic terrorism — "whether it's real or imagined" — legal experts warn that a wide range U.S.-based protest groups could easily be targeted, from Black Lives Matter to environmental groups and advocates for Palestinian rights.3

No president should be trusted with this kind of power, and certainly not Donald Trump.

Will you make a donation to Demand Progress Action and support our work, including fighting this effort to empower Donald Trump to crush nonprofit organizations that criticize or oppose his agenda?

Supporters of H.R. 9495, which is dishonestly titled the "Stop Terror-Financing and Tax Penalties on American Hostages Act," claim that it's needed to bar U.S.-based organizations from funding terrorist organizations.4

But as congressman and constitutional law professor Jamie Raskin pointed out, "rendering support to terrorists is already a felony." Rep. Raskin calls the bill "a werewolf in sheep's clothing."5

The bill initially gained support as part of a backlash against pro-Palestine protests, and 15 Democrats in the House of Representatives actually voted for this terrible bill.6

Demand Progress Action has already mobilized tens of thousands of people to oppose this bill, and we must make our voices heard loud and clear before it's too late.

Will you donate $20 to help Demand Progress Action fight this draconian assault on free speech, and push for other key reforms?

With gratitude,

The team at Demand Progress Action
