Hi, Bunny, it's Patti. I'm reaching out because, just like you, I've watched the attacks on all our fundamental freedoms over the past year – from the disgusting attempts at voter suppression, to the harms of dozens of dangerous abortion bans, to the despicable attacks on trans youth – and I'm fed up. I've never been one to stay on the sidelines when injustice is occurring. And since you're here, I know you're not either.
Can I be honest with you, Bunny? The reason why I'm fed up is because it breaks my heart to see these assaults on our civil rights. It breaks my heart to learn about people who are forced by draconian abortion laws to carry a pregnancy against their will. It breaks my heart when trans kids are unable to go to the bathroom in restrooms that align with their gender identity. When those same trans youth are denied lifesaving, gender-affirming health care. It breaks my heart that people who are running for their lives are forced to wait in danger for a scarce asylum appointment because of cruel, restrictive immigration laws. These are human beings who are counting on folks like you and me and organizations like the ACLU to show up and fight alongside them to ensure their rights are protected. And show up the ACLU does. This year alone the ACLU has played a significant role in protecting civil liberties as they have done for the past hundred years. They've been in the states like Georgia and Arizona challenging abortion bans. They continue to oppose the death penalty in cases like Hasson Bacote's in North Carolina to challenge racially biased capital punishment under the state's Racial Justice Act. They've contested anti-trans legislation across the country to ensure access to gender affirming care and safeguarding rights of LGBTQ individuals. And that's just to name a few. The ACLU is built for moments just like this one, when our rights are on the line. Right now, their end-of-year deadline is looming, so please: Make a generous donation to the ACLU now and have it tripled up to their $750,000 goal. I thank you for being part of this fight, Patti LuPone | ||

These assaults on our civil rights break my heart
