Harris, Donald Trump and Elon Musk are hell-bent on defunding NPR and PBS — and now Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene is joining the attack. Rep. Greene just announced that she is demanding that the CEOs of NPR and PBS testify before her newly formed Delivering on Government Efficiency (DOGE) subcommittee about what she calls their "systematically biased content" and "blatantly ideological and partisan coverage."1 Moments after her announcement, Elon Musk tweeted his endorsement, saying "Excellent action by @RepMTG."2 We've mobilized tens of thousands of people to contact Congress and defend NPR and PBS, but with Trump and his minions ramping up their attacks, we need to do even more. What we're seeing is a coordinated all-out attack on public broadcasting in an attempt to destroy one of the few remaining reliable, independent news outlets in the country. First, Trump called for NPR and PBS to be defunded, calling NPR a "liberal disinformation machine" and a "total scam."3 Then Elon Musk listed the defunding of NPR and PBS among the first priorities for his so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).4 Last week, Trump's newly appointed Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chair, Brandon Carr, announced a phony investigation into NPR and PBS, falsely accusing them of running illegal paid advertisements.5 And today Marjorie Taylor Greene launched the latest attack on NPR and PBS, demanding that their CEOs come before her DOGE subcommittee for what will undoubtedly be a political witch trial. This attack on public media is about one thing: centralizing even more power in the hands of Elon Musk and Donald Trump. Because without public broadcasting, the public would be even more dependent on social media platforms like Musk-owned Twitter/X for news and information — especially in rural areas, where newspapers have largely vanished and the local NPR and PBS stations are often the only local sources of news and information.
