Harris,
On Saturday night, Department of Homeland Security (DHS) agents arrested and detained Mahmoud Khalil, a Palestinian activist and recent Columbia University graduate who helped lead pro-Palestinian protests and solidarity events on campus last year.
These plain-clothes agents arrested Mahmoud claiming his student visa was being revoked by the State Department, even though he has a green card. They then said that is being revoked too. Mahmoud is now reportedly being held in an ICE detention center in Louisiana.
Why are they doing this? Because of Donald Trump's executive orders prohibiting what his administration considers to be "anti-Semitism" and "activities aligned to Hamas" — in other words, they're targeting anyone who leads or participates in pro-Palestinian actions.
Trump's Secretary of State Marco Rubio later issued this threat on Twitter:
This is a blatant attack on our freedom of speech, Harris. As Justice Democrats' Rep. Summer Lee said, "Kidnapping an activist and jailing him in the middle of the night is a brazen act of authoritarianism. Punishing dissent by revoking legal status is a dangerous precedent to set."
We cannot let this far-right administration get away with violating the rights of people like Mahmoud and criminalizing political dissent. If they do, this will go far beyond punishing the pro-Palestinian movement and could impact any one of us for speaking out against anything.
In solidarity,
Justice Democrats
