Trump is trying to dismantle the Postal Board of Governors and place the USPS under the control of his billionaire donor, Howard Lutnick, in what he calls a "type of merger."
Trump aims to manipulate this vital public institution to serve his political ends, including manipulating the census and, ultimately, our political representation. This is a direct assault on our democracy and the independence of a vital public institution.
The USPS is not a private entity to be manipulated for political gain; it's a cornerstone of our communities and democracy.
It ensures the delivery of essential services like medications, Social Security checks, and ballots, particularly crucial for seniors and rural Americans.
Over 640,000 postal workers, including 73,000 veterans, depend on the USPS for their livelihoods.
Trump's plan threatens to dismantle this service, risking privatization that prioritizes profit over public need.
The Postal Reorganization Act of 1970 was designed to shield the USPS from presidential control, and Trump's actions are a blatant violation of this law.
We cannot let this happen.
