Dear Harris, On Tuesday, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that he is ending fact-checking and relaxing hate speech restrictions on Facebook, Instagram, and his other social media platforms. Going forward, Facebook will effectively be an open platform for racist conspiracy theories, election denial, anti-vaccine disinformation... you name it. Frankly, it's terrifying. History has taught us over and over again where this leads. And it's all about currying favor with Donald Trump. It's now more important than ever that we fight back by combating these lies in real time on the platforms where they're spreading — while also building new communities on non-Zuckerberg-owned platforms like BlueSky. This is what we're up against. Will you make a donation to Inequality Media to help us break through with the truth and combat right-wing disinformation across Facebook, Instagram, and other social media platforms? The changes Zuckerberg announced on Tuesday will effectively end any meaningful efforts to curtail lies on his platforms. By removing or weakening several sections of Meta's Hateful Conduct Policy, Zuckerberg is also opening the door to a flood of hate speech targeting immigrants, women, LGBTQ people, and other vulnerable groups. In place of fact-checking, Zuckerberg announced a new protocol, similar to the "Community Notes" system implemented by Elon Musk on Twitter/X, which has since become a firehose of vicious lies and conspiracy theories. The truth is, Mark Zuckerberg has been sucking up to Trump for months. He called Trump a "badass" during the campaign, and since the election, he's given $1 million to Trump's inauguration fund, and added Trump buddy and Ultimate Fighting Championship CEO Dana White to the board of Meta. Here at Inequality Media, we've used Facebook, Instagram, and every other social media platform to educate the public about issues that the corporate media won't touch — and we will continue to do so. We have a proven track record of creating highly persuasive videos and posts that go viral on these platforms, and I believe that it's even more important now to continue using our megaphone to combat the right's lies in real time. However, it's also clear that we must ramp up our efforts to build and expand our networks on other platforms that are not controlled by MAGA-friendly oligarchs like Musk and Zuckerberg. This also means continuing to build out our own independent digital infrastructure, including our website and email list, to make sure that we can continue to reach people regardless of what happens to corporate-owned social media platforms. The next four years will be an existential fight for democracy. I believe we can win, but we must work harder and be more effective than ever before — and your donations are absolutely essential to support everything we do. That's why I'm asking you today: Will you make a donation to Inequality Media to help us break through with the truth and combat right-wing disinformation across Facebook, Instagram, and other social media platforms? Thank you, Robert Reich Inequality Media |
