Dear Harris,
Donald Trump and Elon Musk have launched a coordinated, multipronged attack on NPR and PBS like nothing we've ever seen.
Trump and Musk have both called for NPR and PBS to be fully defunded, which would be a crippling blow to local affiliates around the country.
Trump's FCC chair, Brendan Carr, just launched a phony investigation into NPR and PBS, falsely accusing them of running illegal advertisements as a pretext to attack their funding.
And then, this week, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene sent a letter demanding that the CEOs of NPR and PBS testify before her congressional DOGE subcommittee so she can attack them with more smears and slander.
Republicans have wanted to defund NPR and PBS for decades, and they've always successfully beaten back the attacks. But I'm sincerely worried that this time could be different.
So I'm asking you today: Will you make a monthly donation to help alert the public, get out the truth, and stop Trump's plan to defund NPR and PBS?
When I was Secretary of Labor under President Clinton, I always looked forward to being interviewed by NPR and PBS because I knew the conversations would be smart, informative, and elevating for viewers and listeners.
The interviews were never easy. They challenged me on policy and refused to let me get away with dodging questions. But compared to the shout-fests on cable TV or the 10-second sound bite I might get on the evening news, it was always a breath of fresh air.
Today, in a world of rampant disinformation and social media platforms owned by MAGA billionaires like Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg, NPR and PBS are even more essential.
That's exactly why Trump and Musk want to destroy NPR and PBS — so they will have even more power and control over the news and information that the public receives.
In many parts of the country, the local PBS or NPR station is the only remaining source of news. That's why Republicans and Democrats have historically supported public broadcasting, and previous attempts to defund the Corporation for Public Broadcasting have failed.
But this time is different, and we must do more. That's why we're sounding the alarm to help save NPR and PBS before it's too late, and we're counting on your support.
Will you make a monthly donation to help alert the public and stop Donald Trump's plan to defund NPR and PBS?
Thank you,
Robert Reich
