Harris, it's Day 2 of my campaign to be California's next governor, and I don't just want to ask you for money—I want to explain exactly how early donations matter.
Here are three reasons why campaigns like when you donate early:
- They help campaigns plan. Having resources early on gives a better idea of what we can spend on ads, events, voter contact, and other things we need to win. When we look at whether to hire that organizer or travel to that community, we keep fundraising numbers in mind.
- They build momentum. Pundits and others use campaign donation numbers to judge whether campaigns are viable. A strong early fundraising number suggests that our campaign is one to take seriously, which will help us earn more support.
- They put special interests on notice. Special interests are less likely to mess with us if they see a groundswell of grassroots support. Meeting—or even exceeding—our early fundraising targets makes outside groups think twice about spending in this race.
I know how hard Americans work for their money, which is why I'm asking you to chip in now when your dollar goes the furthest to help us win. I wouldn't be asking if it wasn't important.
