Harris, while Florida Governor Ron DeSantis campaigned for president in New Hampshire, my family in South Florida was losing our home. The 2023 Fort Lauderdale floods dumped approximately 26 inches of rain within approximately 12 hours between April 12 and 13, causing $1.1 billion in damage. Our home was completely flooded. Our low-lying neighborhood in northwest Fort Lauderdale left me wading chest deep down the street as our neighbors climbed onto cars. My family unplugged all home appliances and slept on beds that were high enough to remain dry from the water rushing in. I interviewed with NPR's All Things Considered as soon as I could to get the word out. It was like a hurricane strike. But in our modern climate reality, disaster can strike anywhere, at any moment. And we know that with leaky pipes, dirty water, and sunny day flooding, South Florida — like so many communities across our country — is more vulnerable than ever.
