Harris, Donald Trump and Elon Musk have announced plans to defund NPR and PBS, the beloved public media networks behind Sesame Street, All Things Considered, and This American Life.1 Trump tried to defund NPR and PBS during his first term but was stopped. This time, NPR staff are warning that the threat is much, much greater.2 We've already mobilized tens of thousands of people to help save NPR and PBS. But with the new Republican Congress sworn in this week, we need to ramp up our campaign right now. Will you make a donation to support our work, including our efforts to save NPR and PBS?
The news and information programming of NPR and PBS is absolutely essential, given the demise of so many local newspapers and the scourge of disinformation on social media. In addition, public broadcasting provides essential services, including early childhood education through programs like Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood and Blue's Clues. Since the election, the key role of public broadcasting has become even more apparent. The owners of corporate media outlets like The Washington Post and ABC News have lined up to curry favor with Trump, and Meta just announced the end of fact-checking on its platforms.3,4 Trump and Musk want to get rid of public broadcasting in order to further cripple the free press. If they can defund NPR and PBS, it will be one more blow to democracy and the ability of the public to hold their leaders accountable. We can't let that happen.
